- PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To supervise and coordinate the daily materials handling, picking, packing and despatch activities within the warehouse, ensuring that customer orders are processed safely, accurately and on time.
The Team Leader is responsible for maintaining effective workflow, material traceability, warehouse discipline and the efficient utilisation of employees and materials-handling equipment.
- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Team Leadership & Workflow
- Supervise and coordinate daily warehouse and despatch activities.
- Allocate picking, packing, loading and materials-handling duties.
- Prioritise workload according to customer delivery requirements.
- Conduct daily operational briefings and communicate priorities.
- Identify delays or operational problems and take appropriate corrective action.
Materials Handling & Stock Control
- Ensure material is moved, handled and stored safely and correctly.
- Coordinate the movement of pipe, plate, round bar, fittings, flanges and other products.
- Ensure correct material identification and storage locations are maintained.
- Control offcuts, remnants, returned material and finished goods.
- Assist with stock counts and investigation of stock discrepancies.
Picking, Packing & Despatch
- Control the flow and allocation of picking slips.
- Ensure correct product, grade, size, quantity, and specification are picked.
- Verify completed orders prior to despatch.
- Ensure orders are correctly packed, labelled and protected for transportation.
- Coordinate vehicle loading, customer collections, couriers, and third-party transporters.
- Ensure orders are ready according to agreed delivery schedules.
- Communicate potential delays promptly to the relevant departments.
Quality & Traceability
- Maintain material identification and heat/lot traceability throughout warehouse operations.
- Ensure tags, labels and heat numbers remain attached and legible.
- Prevent unidentified, incorrect, or non-conforming material from being despatched.
- Report and assist with the investigation of picking, packing, material damage and despatch errors.
- Support ISO 9001 and company Quality Management System requirements.
Health, Safety & Housekeeping
- Enforce company Health & Safety procedures and correct PPE usage.
- Ensure safe lifting, loading, stacking, and materials-handling practices.
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses and equipment defects.
- Maintain clean, organised, and safe warehouse and despatch areas.
- Ensure materials-handling equipment is operated only by authorised personnel.
- MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Matric / Grade 12 certificate.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar warehouse, materials handling or despatch environment.
- Experience within the metals, steel, stainless steel or engineering distribution industry is strongly preferred.
- Previous Team Leader or supervisory experience advantageous.
- Experience handling long, heavy, and irregular materials advantageous.
- Basic computer literacy and experience working with ERP/warehouse systems advantageous.
- Forklift and/or overhead crane knowledge advantageous.

The employee may be required to perform additional reasonable duties related to warehouse, materials handling and despatch operations as required by management.
The position requires a hands-on Team Leader who maintains a visible presence on the warehouse floor and takes ownership of ensuring that the correct material reaches the correct customer, safely, accurately and on time.
